“Wissensorganisation” is the name of a series of biennial conferences/workshops with a long tradition organized by the German chapter of the International Society of Knowledge Organization (ISKO).
Knowledge organization is a discipline with a long standing tradition. Traditional knowledge organization focusses on the description and organization of knowledge in libraries, archives, databases, scientific domains, etc. With modern communication techniques users expect knowledge to be available and instantly accessible from different sources, different disciplines and different sectors of society. Thus traditional knowledge organization is confronted with new requirements regarding structured and flexible knowledge representations that support knowledge discovery from disparate sources and inferencing over the many pieces of information.
The aim of this year’s conference is to discuss the possibilities that tools and methods developed in digital humanities can offer for knowledge organization.
Digital Humanities develop computer-assisted procedures and digital resources for use in the humanities and cultural sciences. Digital Humanities is a inherently interdisciplinary science, building on traditional humanities and cultural sciences as on concepts, procedures and standards of computer science. Typical fields of work and research are, for example, digital editions, quantitative text analysis, visualization of complex data structures or the theory of digital media.
Structuring and interacting with large data collections has become a major issue of knowledge organization. On the other hand side Digital Humanities have come up with new ways of accessing information and knowledge. We therefore invite the community to a discussion in which we will try to analyze how these new methods can be integrated with classification systems. Furthermore, we want to foster the exchange of ideas between different communities involved in research concerning, among other history, educational science, digital humanities, visualization, machine learning, information retrieval, data mining, human computer interaction, library science, etc. The conference is especially intended for researchers working in knowledge organization, data organization, description and visualization and digital humanities who want to discuss problems and synergies.
